Harnett County is proud to celebrate Commissioner W. Brooks Matthews, as he will be recognized with the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award by Campbell University during Homecoming Weekend in October.

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes Campbell alumni who have distinguished themselves through their personal and professional accomplishments and their support of Campbell University.

“I am honored and excited to be recognized by Campbell University in this way. The school has definitely been a significant part of my life, and I appreciate the Christian education it provided,” said Matthews.

Matthews stated that he treasures many fond memories of growing up in Buies Creek, spending his days playing and riding his bicycle around the campus even before attending as a student.

“I am blessed to have developed the same love for Campbell University that my mother, Mrs. Diamond J. Matthews, demonstrated throughout her 65 years of service to the University,” said Matthews. “Campbell has been woven into the fabric of my family and my life, and I am truly humbled and grateful for this recognition. I am thankful to the University for the memories it has given me and the opportunity to be part of the Campbell family.”

Matthews earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1976 and a Master of Education degree in 1980 from Campbell University. For more than fifty years he has dedicated his career to serving students, educators, and residents throughout our county.

His recognition reflects a lifetime of service that has made a lasting impact on Harnett County. His selection as a distinguished alumnus celebrates not only his professional accomplishments, but also his continued dedication to the community he has called home and served for decades.

Matthews was elected to the Harnett County Board of Commissioners in 2020 representing District 3. He served as Chairman from 2020-2021.

Matthews serves on various Board and Committees to include the Transportation Advisory Board, Economic Development Partnership, Mid-Carolina Board of Directors, and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, to name a few.
